Sure we can easily dissect his personal life. And I know he probably irritates many of you. But guess what? He is one of the smartest actors out there, and his last film Mission Impossible 4 was a big hit (and pretty good by the way).
As Harry Callaghan said, “A Man’s Got To Know His Limitations.” And Tom Cruise clearly knows his. Let’s be honest – he has a limited range of acting abilities. Can movie-going audiences really see Tom Cruise playing Robert DeNiro’s Jake LaMotta? Or Daniel Day-Lewis’ Bill the Butcher? Or Sean Penn’s Harvey Milk? Of course not.
So what does he do instead? He surrounds himself with the best filmmakers in the world and provides consistently decent acting performances and even occasionally a noteworthy performance or two.
Look at this list of first-class directors: Stanley Kubrick, Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, Michael Mann, Brian DePalma, Francis Ford Coppola, Ridley Scott, Oliver Stone, Barry Levinson.
Even more notable directors: Tony Scott, Rob Reiner, Ron Howard, Sydney Pollack, Neil Jordan, Cameron Crowe, Paul Thomas Anderson, John Woo, Ed Zwick, JJ Abrams and Robert Redford.
I can’t think of a single actor in the last 30 years that comes anywhere close to working with this level of talent!
As a result, he has been nominated three times for the Oscar (Born on the Fourth of July, Jerry Maguire and Magnolia). And he has starred in the Best Picture Rain Man as well as Best Picture nominees Born on the 4th of July, A Few Good Men and Jerry Maguire.
Sure those films are now more than a decade old. And sure he’s been nominated for a Razzie (or two or three). But throw in a little Les Grossman, a little MI4 and give the man some credit! When given the lemons of limited acting range, he’s made lemonade squeezing out a pretty impressive film resume.
Are you guys coming around? I’m not saying you have to love the man or his movies. But at least give the guy some respect. What say you Cruise Haters???
Have you ever engaged in a spirited debate with your friends about your favorite movies?
Have you found that film critics overlook some of the best movies of our generation?
We created Movie Raiders because we love talking about movies.
